Dress and Etiquette in Türkiye: Mosques and Everyday Courtesy

Reviewed 5 November 2026

The short answer

At active mosques, follow the entrance instructions on clothing, shoes, visitor routes and photography. Diyanet guidance includes modest dress, covered hair for women, quiet conduct and shoe removal where directed. In other settings, clothing depends on the activity and weather. For photographs of individuals, seek permission even when photography of the building is allowed.

Religious architecture can be a highlight of an Istanbul stay while remaining part of someone else’s daily worship. A few practical preparations make it easier to appreciate the building and give its users space.

The same courtesy extends to museums, workshops and streets, although the requirements change. Site instructions and the wishes of the people present are more useful than a country-wide script.

Prepare for a mosque visit

Keep a suitable layer or scarf available when religious buildings are part of the day. Shoes should be comfortable for the streets and straightforward to remove. These small preparations avoid having to find clothing midway through a visit.

At the entrance, follow the building’s visitor route and any instructions about waiting or prayer. Diyanet’s English guidance provides a general foundation; screens, entrances and admission arrangements belong to the particular mosque.

Clothing beyond religious buildings

A coastal afternoon, a city museum and a village visit involve different activities and practical needs. Dress for the weather and the setting. Broad stereotypes about either resort life or conservative clothing offer little help with an individual day.

People in photographs

A person’s permission is separate from a venue’s photography policy. Ask before making someone the subject of an image, and accept a refusal. Keep clear of worshippers and restricted areas when finding a viewpoint.

Museums may set additional restrictions. Istanbul Modern publishes rules about flash, tripods and professional photography. Read the instructions for the institution being visited before using equipment.

If an entrance is closed

A visitor route may pause for worship or change for another reason. Staff can explain where to wait or whether a later return is possible. Entering through an unrelated doorway risks intruding into a private or working area.

The Istanbul architecture essay offers ways to connect a building with the surrounding city. A visit outside or time in the district can still make a worthwhile part of the day when the interior is unavailable.

Ordinary courtesies

Seek permission before handling a crafted object, entering a workplace or taking a close portrait. A stall or café remains a business while visitors find it interesting. A purchase can be declined plainly and warmly.

The useful habit is to attend to the situation: a quiet doorway, someone at work or a room in use. Courtesy then becomes a response to the people present, not a performance of supposed local customs.

Our judgment

Prepare a light covering and practical shoes for religious visits, then follow each entrance’s instructions. A brief question to staff is usually the clearest way to resolve uncertainty.
