Istanbul and the Lycian Coast in Twelve Days
Begin with Istanbul’s buildings and neighbourhoods, then give six nights to the coast—with a choice of one base or two.
12 days and 11 nights.
- Istanbul4 nights
- Fethiye area3 nights
- Kaş3 nights
- Istanbul before departure1 night
Why this length
After Istanbul’s concentrated cultural days, the coast can change what counts as a full day. Time in a harbour town or beside the water may be the point of the holiday, with one Lycian visit adding another subject.
This route gives the coastal stay a substantial block. Fethiye and Kaş offer variety, while six nights in one base can suit those who prefer to settle. The choice follows the shore, property and daily rhythm you want.
This twelve-day idea allocates four nights to Istanbul, three to the Fethiye area, three to Kaş and a final Istanbul night before departure. Staying in one coastal base for all six nights removes the day-8 move. Flights, transfers, accommodation and activities need independent confirmation for your dates; the route is illustrative, with no available package implied.
The route, day by day.
- Days 1–4Istanbul
A city with several scales
Settle in, then divide the full days between the historic peninsula, a different neighbourhood and the water. Keep enough room for meals and a museum rather than repeating a monument circuit.
- Days 5–7Fethiye area
Find the right coastal base
Travel and settle on day 5. Use the next two days for the type of water, shore and town time you actually enjoy, with an optional cultural outing after checking access and conditions.
- Days 8–10Kaş
A second coast, a slower eye
Move on day 8, either directly or with one carefully planned stop. Keep the two full Kaş days for the town and coast, or use one for Lycian archaeology such as Xanthos and Letoon if the road plan suits.
- Days 11–12Istanbul and departure
A separate return-travel day
Return to Istanbul on day 11 and sleep there. Depart on day 12 with the domestic journey behind you, checking which airport the onward flight uses.
The honest friction
What the transfers really cost.
| Leg | How | Time in motion | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Istanbul to Fethiye area | Suitable flight to a regional airport, then road transfer | Allocate day 5 to travel and settling in | Check flights to Dalaman and the actual transfer to your chosen property; no service is assumed on a particular date. |
| Fethiye area to Kaş | Road | Allocate a coastal moving day rather than a tightly timed excursion | A stop at an archaeological site requires checking the current route, hours, luggage and the group’s energy. |
| Kaş to Istanbul | Road to the chosen airport, then an available flight | Reserve day 11 for the return journey | Compare Dalaman and Antalya against actual flights and road arrangements. Do not assume a short airport transfer. |
Pace
Relaxed at the bases, with three substantial moving days. Swimming, boats, paths and archaeological surfaces each require their own suitability and conditions check.
If you have less time
For less packing, choose one coastal base for all six nights and remove the day-8 move. Do not try to add Cappadocia without more days or a clear sacrifice elsewhere.
Change it for your interests
- Archaeology
- Choose one substantial Lycian outing and give it its own day. Avoid converting every coastal afternoon into another drive.
- Walking
- Investigate a locally suitable short trail with current conditions and return arrangements, rather than assuming a full Lycian Way segment is a casual stroll.
- Rest
- Stay in one coastal base throughout, choosing it for the exact beach or swimming access you want.
Choose your coastal base precisely
Fethiye names a town and a wider holiday area with different kinds of setting. Kaş has its own relationship to the waterfront and surrounding coast. Ask about the specific property’s swimming access and the journey into town before booking.
The Kaş-or-Fethiye comparison is a useful first decision. If one base already offers the holiday you want, six nights there may be more satisfying than dividing the coast into two stays.
Choose a Lycian cultural day
Xanthos and Letoon connect the coastal landscape with Lycian cultural history. UNESCO describes their related cultural significance. If the group wants this archaeological focus, give the outing its own day and check the route, access and physical demands.
Patara or another coastal site may offer an alternative interest, but compare its particular interest with the day you have available. A site visit still needs travel, attention, water and recovery time. It should add something you want to understand.
A day at sea is a separate arrangement
A boat outing can change how you see the coast. Check the responsible provider’s current operation, boarding access, safety arrangements, weather policy and the type of outing involved. This illustrative route includes no verified boat service or booking arrangement.
For a walk, assess the route separately. Current conditions, heat, surface and the return journey matter. A short, well-chosen outing may fit this holiday better than a demanding trail stage.
Protect the return
From Kaş, the airport journey needs serious space in the plan. Compare the road transfer and available flight together rather than choosing an airport on airfare alone. Keep day 11 for the move back to Istanbul, confirm the arrival and departure airport codes and leave the final night free of ambitious sightseeing.
The trip is strongest when it ends with some of the ease it promised at the beginning. If the transport for your dates undermines that, simplify the coast to one base or add a night rather than asking the last day to absorb every uncertainty.
